Loving Frank is a fictionalized account of the life of Mamah Borthwick Cheney, the "other woman" who ended Wright's first marriage and came to a tragic end at their beloved Wisconsin home. Writer Nancy Horan focuses on Mamah, the independent, educated woman who disregarded the restrictions put on women in the early twentieth century and lived her life as she saw fit despite the personal cost. The book is out now and has gotten great reviews.
Death in a Prairie House: Frank Lloyd Wright and the Taliesin Murders by William R. Drennan may be the perfect nonfiction follow-up book. While Loving Frank gently ends with the August 15, 1914 murder of Mamah and six others, Drennan examines the event in detail. The hardcover edition is out now, but the paperback version is due out in September.
You know, this summer reading project of mine was actually a great idea. Of course, the stack of books I desperately want to read keeps growing, but it really is invigorating and is fueling my already burning passion for Chicago's history. I miss you all...but, hopefully I will return a better blogger and writer. Stay tuned.
